Abstract

The health walk undertaken by the Hon’ble Lyonpo Sangay Ngedup, Minister of Health & Education and six other members from Trasigang to the capital city of Thimphu covering a distance of 560 KMs concluded successfully as scheduled i.e. on 10th October 2002.

The Hon’ble Minister met people throughout his journey and spread health messages. He emphasized on the importance of utilizing health services and healthy living. He talked to people about the importance of physical activity, sanitation, nutrition, breast-feeding and alcoholism and their implications.

The sponsored walk became a milestone in the country’s history as people from all walks of life, friends and well-wishers from overseas participated physically, financially and spiritually in the walk. In total, about Nu. 82 million (US$ 1.7m) has been generated out of this walk.

The health walk has created much awareness amongst the people of Bhutan about the health and health related issues and brought the whole country under unity. It has also sensitized the international community on what this small country is doing for the health of the people of Bhutan.

The response from the international community has been very encouraging and contribution continue to pour in both from home and abroad. In fact, aftermath impact is expected to be very encouraging.

The following are a few of the many photographs taken during the walk which we thought would be of some interest to individuals, families, communities, organizations, countries and regions worldwide.
